With their debut full-length Everything You Thought You Knew, Orange Island
proves that head-banging and ass-shaking are coming back into fashion. Their great
use of a heavier guitar sound and pounding melody mixed with honest, sincere vocals
and crushing drums can only be described as pure rock bliss. Although, just like
every other band, they are often lumped into the easy categories such as pop/punk
and even "emo," the band insists that their main goal is just to write
the music that they love and to have a damn good time doing so.
With their first release The Shape of Calling EP, also on Iodine Recordings,
Orange Island explores such themes as drinking, friends, regret and the past.
Everything You Thought You Knew shows more maturity with well thought-out
and layered song arrangements combined with more in-depth, yet ambiguous, lyrical
content. While still rocking hard, this record shows the darker side of growing up
trapped in a small town and deals with the good times and the disappointments of
the struggles in the face of alcohol, drugs and tragedy. It can only be described
as devastatingly catchy, fun as hell and widely universal.
